Bird flu (Avian influenza) and human flu are both caused by Influenza A viruses, but they differ significantly in their host adaptation, transmission and severity. Here, we have used the Resonant Recognition Model (RRM), which is innovative approach using knowledge from quantum physics, biochemistry and mathematics, capable to analyse interactions between proteins and their targets, including other proteins, DNA, RNA, or small molecules. Using the RRM model we have identified different characteristics for different types of flu viruses, and we have found that there are three groups of flu viruses with completely different interactions with host cells receptors. Such finding can provide explanation why different flu viruses can interact only with specific hosts and why there is extremely low cross infection between different species, in particular between birds and humans.
