Contextualization and localization of materials in classroom instruction of elementary schools in San Miguel island

Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the learning environment and ensuring the holistic development of learners. This study investigates the contextualization and localization of instructional materials in public elementary schools of San Miguel Island, Tabaco City during the school year 2017–2018. Contextualization refers to the adaptation of lessons to real-life situations and learners’ experiences, while localization involves integrating local culture, resources, and community practices into classroom instruction. The research focuses on five learning areas English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan examining the materials used, their effectiveness, and the challenges encountered by teachers. Grounded in the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 and DepEd’s policy guidelines, the study emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy in improving student motivation, comprehension, and achievement. Respondents include permanent teachers from six public elementary schools in San Miguel Island. Findings are expected to highlight the strengths and limitations of current practices, identify barriers such as limited resources and training, and propose actionable strategies to enhance instructional delivery. The study’s significance extends to DepEd, CHED, curriculum developers, school administrators, teachers, parents, and pupils, offering insights into policy formulation, teacher preparation, and community engagement. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the improvement of classroom instruction by promoting learner-centered, flexible, and culturally relevant approaches that align with national educational reforms and local realities.
