The unprecedented growth of industrialization, urbanization, population expansion, and intensive agricultural production has significantly increased the volume and complexity of global waste generation. Municipal solid waste, industrial effluents, agricultural residues, biomedical waste, plastics, heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and electronic waste continue to accumulate at alarming rates, creating severe environmental and public health concerns. Conventional waste disposal strategies such as landfilling, incineration, and chemical treatments are often unsustainable because they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, toxic by-products, and ecological degradation. Biotechnology has emerged as a highly effective and sustainable alternative for waste management and environmental remediation by harnessing the metabolic capabilities of microorganisms, plants, fungi, algae, and engineered biological systems. Techniques including composting, anaerobic digestion, microbial bioremediation, phytoremediation, mycoremediation, biosorption, bioaugmentation, bioleaching, and synthetic biology-based interventions provide eco-friendly, cost-effective, and resource-efficient solutions for pollution control. Advances in genomics, metagenomics, proteomics, nanobiotechnology, biosensors, and artificial intelligence have further strengthened the efficiency and scalability of biotechnology-driven remediation systems. This review comprehensively examines current biotechnology approaches for waste management and bioremediation, their mechanisms, industrial applications, benefits, limitations, and future directions. Biotechnology-based waste management systems are essential for achieving sustainable environmental protection, resource recovery, and circular bioeconomy goals.
