This study examines the mental health and well-being of Afghan students in India, focusing on the challenges they face as international students from a conflict-affected background. The study adopts a qualitative-dominant mixed-method approach, utilizing an interview-based questionnaire administered online to thirty Afghan students enrolled in various higher education institutions across India. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, supported by descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages) to enhance clarity and interpretation.
The findings reveal that Afghan students commonly experience stress, anxiety, homesickness, and emotional instability, particularly during the initial period of adjustment. These challenges are driven by academic pressure, financial difficulties, cultural adaptation, separation from family, and uncertainty regarding their future career prospects and visa status. In addition, the ongoing political instability in Afghanistan continues to exert a significant psychological impact on students’ mental well-being.
Despite these challenges, students demonstrate resilience by adopting various coping strategies, including seeking social support, engaging in physical activities, and religious or spiritual practices.
The study highlights the urgent need for accessible counseling services, financial assistance, visa stability, and culturally sensitive community support systems to improve the overall well-being of Afghan students in India.
